Guide last updated October 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the full intended duration of stay, with at least 1 blank page
  • Digital passport-style photo (taken within the last 6 months, white background)
  • Confirmed round-trip flight itinerary
  • Detailed day-by-day travel itinerary for the visit
  • Proof of sufficient funds - bank statement for the last 3 months
  • Proof of accommodation for each night of the stay
  • Employment letter confirming leave and salary, or business registration if self-employed
  • No biometrics are required for the e-Visa application itself; fingerprint and photo capture occur automatically at immigration on arrival in Japan

Visa types

  • Temporary Visitor e-Visa (Tourism): single entry, fee approximately JPY 3,000, allows a stay of up to 90 days
  • Temporary Visitor e-Visa (Business): single entry, same fee, requires an invitation letter from the host company in Japan
  • Multiple-entry visa: available through the standard paper application route for frequent travelers, fee approximately JPY 6,000, requires additional justification
  • Transit visa: generally not required for short airport transits under 72 hours for South African passport holders

How to apply online

  • Access the Japan e-Visa portal at evisa.mofa.go.jp (or apply through an accredited travel agency where the e-Visa pilot requires agency submission)
  • Complete the online application with passport, travel, and itinerary details
  • Upload your digital photo and required supporting documents
  • Pay the visa fee (approximately JPY 3,000 for a single-entry tourist e-Visa)
  • Processing typically takes 5-10 business days
  • Once approved, you receive an electronic visa record linked to your passport number - no physical sticker is needed, but keep the approval email/QR code for check-in and immigration
  • Present your passport and approval confirmation at check-in and on arrival in Japan

Fees & processing time

  • E-Visa fee: approximately JPY 3,000 (around USD 20) for a single-entry tourist visa
  • Multiple-entry visa fee: approximately JPY 6,000 (around USD 40)
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee for the e-Visa route since it is processed directly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or an accredited agency
  • Standard processing time: 5-10 business days
  • No official express service; apply at least 3-4 weeks before travel to allow for review

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply well in advance (ideally 4 weeks ahead) since the e-Visa pilot program for South Africans can have slower review periods than for long-established partner countries
  • Common rejection reasons: vague or incomplete day-by-day itinerary, insufficient funds relative to trip length, and inconsistent employment documentation
  • If the e-Visa route is unavailable for your travel dates, the standard paper visa application through an accredited travel agency acting on behalf of the Japanese Embassy in Pretoria remains an option
  • Japan does not permit visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry for South African passport holders, so apply well before booking non-refundable flights
  • Extensions of stay inside Japan are handled by the regional Immigration Services Agency office and require a valid reason and supporting documents
