Guide last updated October 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent passport photos (35mm x 45mm, white background, neutral expression)
  • Travel/medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage valid across the whole Schengen area
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings or formal invitation letter)
  • Round-trip flight itinerary or reservation
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months showing sufficient funds (around EUR 50-100 per day of stay is typically expected)
  • Employment letter confirming leave and salary, or business registration documents if self-employed
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and digital photo) captured in person at the VFS Global centre, valid for 5 years once on file

Visa types

  • Schengen Type C Tourist visa: single, double, or multiple entry, fee EUR 90, valid for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period
  • Schengen Type C Business visa: same fee and validity structure, requires an invitation letter from an Italian company or chamber of commerce event registration
  • Schengen Type C Family Visit visa: requires an invitation and proof of relationship with the host in Italy
  • Airport transit visa (Type A): rarely required for South African passport holders, fee EUR 90 if applicable

How to apply

  • Book an appointment online with VFS Global Italy Visa Application Centre (Pretoria, Johannesburg, or Cape Town)
  • Complete the Schengen application form online or on paper and gather all supporting documents per the checklist
  • Attend the appointment in person to submit documents, pay fees, and provide biometrics
  • Pay the EUR 90 visa fee plus the VFS service fee (approximately ZAR 450-550) at the centre
  • Standard processing time is 15 calendar days from the appointment date, though it can extend to 30-45 days during peak summer season or if additional documents are requested
  • No visa interview is typically required, but officers may request clarifying documents by email
  • Collect your passport with the visa decision from the VFS centre or opt for courier delivery

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 90 for adults, EUR 45 for children aged 6-12, free for children under 6
  • VFS service fee: approximately ZAR 450-550 in addition to the visa fee
  • Total cost estimate: roughly ZAR 2,200-2,600 all-in for an adult single applicant
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days, extendable up to 30-45 days in peak periods
  • A premium lounge or courier service is available through VFS for an extra fee but does not speed up the embassy's own decision time

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 working days before travel, ideally 4-6 weeks ahead to absorb peak-season delays
  • Common rejection reasons for South African applicants: insufficient travel insurance coverage, inconsistent bank statement patterns, and unclear ties justifying return to South Africa
  • If visiting multiple Schengen countries, apply at the consulate of the country where you will spend the most nights, or your first point of entry if time is split evenly
  • VFS Global is the only route for Italian visa applications from South Africa - there is no direct consulate drop-off for standard tourist applications
  • Once issued, the Schengen visa allows travel to all Schengen member states, not just Italy, within the approved validity window
