Guide last updated October 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the intended duration of stay plus 6 months, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed AVATS (Irish Visa Online) application summary sheet, printed and signed
  • Two passport-sized photos (35mm x 45mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Proof of sufficient funds - bank statements for the last 3-6 months showing a stable balance
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings or invitation letter from an Irish host)
  • Return or onward flight itinerary
  • Letter from employer confirming leave approval and salary, or proof of self-employment/income
  • Travel/medical insurance covering the Schengen-equivalent minimum is recommended though not mandatory for Ireland
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) collected in person at the VFS Global visa application centre

Visa types

  • Short Stay 'C' Visa (Tourist/Visit): single entry, fee EUR 60, valid for a stay of up to 90 days
  • Short Stay 'C' Visa (Business): single or multiple entry, fee EUR 60 (single) or EUR 100 (multiple), stay up to 90 days
  • Transit Visa: for travelers passing through Irish airports, fee EUR 25, very short validity
  • Long Stay 'D' Visa (study, work, join family): fee EUR 60-100 depending on category, requires separate supporting documents and longer processing

How to apply

  • Complete the application on the AVATS (Irish Visa Online) system and print the summary sheet
  • Book an appointment at the VFS Global Ireland Visa Application Centre in Pretoria (or use the Cape Town/Durban drop-off points where available)
  • Submit your passport, printed AVATS summary, photos, and supporting documents checklist in person
  • Pay the visa fee (EUR 60 for a single-entry short stay visa) plus the VFS service fee (approximately ZAR 450-600) at submission
  • Standard processing takes around 8 weeks; the Irish Immigration Service does not offer a guaranteed express option for South African applicants
  • Track your application status online via the AVATS reference number
  • No in-person interview is normally required unless requested by the visa officer

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 60 (single entry) or EUR 100 (multiple entry), payable at the VFS centre in rand equivalent
  • VFS service fee: approximately ZAR 450-600 in addition to the visa fee
  • Total cost estimate: roughly ZAR 1,600-2,200 all-in for a single-entry visit visa
  • Standard processing time: approximately 8 weeks from submission, though it can run longer during peak season (June-August, December)
  • No premium or express processing is available for this route

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply at least 3 months before your intended travel date given the long and sometimes variable processing time
  • Common rejection reasons for South African applicants: insufficient proof of ties to South Africa, unclear funding source, and inconsistent travel history
  • Submitting through VFS Global is mandatory - there is no direct embassy drop-off for standard applications
  • Keep copies of every document submitted, as VFS and the Irish Immigration Service do not return originals quickly if a query is raised
  • Extensions of a short-stay visa are rarely granted inside Ireland - plan your itinerary within the approved 90-day window
