What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • No biometrics required for the visa waiver
  • Travel insurance recommended

Visa types

  • No visa is required for tourism of up to 90 days. This entry is valid across the whole CA-4 bloc (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua) without needing a new stamp at each internal border.

Entry conditions

  • 90 days visa-free, shared cumulatively across the CA-4 countries
  • No paid work permitted
  • Extensions possible through the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migracion
  • Must exit the CA-4 bloc entirely (e.g. to Mexico or Belize) and re-enter to reset the count if the 90 days run out while still travelling in the region

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for entry
  • CA-4 extension fee roughly $20-30 equivalent in quetzales
  • Extensions processed within a few business days at a migration office

Tips for South African travelers

  • Because the 90 days is shared across Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua, track your total days across all four to avoid an accidental overstay
  • There is no South African embassy in Guatemala - the nearest consular support is usually via Mexico City
  • Keep paper and digital copies of every entry stamp when crossing CA-4 internal borders
