Guide last updated October 21, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the full duration of stay plus a buffer (6 months recommended)
  • Digital passport photo for the online application
  • Mandatory travel medical insurance covering the stay in Cuba
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, Casa Particular reservation, or host details)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • No in-person biometrics for the e-visa, though officers may take a photo/fingerprint on arrival

Visa types

  • Tourist Card (Tarjeta de Turista) e-Visa - single entry, valid up to 90 days from issue, max stay 30 days (extendable once for another 30 days inside Cuba), fee approx $25-30
  • Business visa - requires an invitation and is processed separately through the Cuban consulate
  • Family/visit visa - for visiting Cuban nationals, needs different documentation

How to apply online

  • Purchase the Cuban Tourist Card through an authorized online visa service, or sometimes via the airline at check-in depending on route
  • Complete the online form with passport and travel details, upload the photo, and pay by card
  • Processing is usually 3-5 working days when applied for in advance
  • The approved tourist card is emailed as a document to print and present along with your passport at check-in and on arrival (commonly Jose Marti International Airport, Havana)

Fees & processing time

  • Tourist card fee: approximately $25-30
  • Mandatory travel insurance (if not already held): approximately $3-6 per day of stay
  • Service/agency fee if using a third-party provider: approximately $10-15 extra
  • Total cost estimate: $50-80 depending on insurance and stay length
  • Standard processing: 3-5 working days
  • Rush processing (24-48 hours) available from some providers for an extra fee

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply at least 2-3 weeks before travel since direct connections from South Africa are limited and routing (often via Europe) adds complexity
  • Keep proof of travel insurance accessible, as Cuban authorities check for it on arrival
  • Carry sufficient cash in euros or USD, since cards linked to US networks generally do not work in Cuba and South African cards have very limited ATM access
  • The 30-day stay can be extended once at a Cuban immigration office (Inmigracion y Extranjeria) for a small fee
  • Check DIRCO advisories on currency and banking limitations before departure
