Azerbaijan Visa for South Africa Citizens 2026

South African citizens can apply for an Azerbaijan e-visa online via evisa.gov.az; the standard fee is around USD 20-25 with processing in about 3 business days, or an express service within 3 hours for a higher fee.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
  • Digital passport photo (uploaded during the online application)
  • Scanned copy of the passport bio-data page
  • Return or onward flight ticket (may be requested at the border)
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking)
  • A valid email address and payment card for the online application - no physical embassy visit or biometrics required

Visa types

  • ASAN Visa (single-entry e-visa) - valid for 30 days from issue, allowing a single stay of up to 30 days, for tourism or business
  • e-Visa standard processing - same validity, for travellers who do not need the faster ASAN service
  • Multiple-entry visas and longer stays require application through the Azerbaijani Embassy rather than the e-visa portal

How to apply online

  • Go to evisa.gov.az and select Azerbaijan e-Visa (ASAN Visa)
  • Complete the online form with passport and travel details
  • Upload a digital passport photo and the passport bio-data page
  • Pay the fee online by card (USD or local currency equivalent)
  • Receive the approved e-visa by email as a PDF - print it or keep it accessible on your phone to present on arrival

Fees & processing time

  • Standard e-visa fee: approximately USD 20-25
  • Express ASAN Visa service: higher fee, around USD 22-50 depending on urgency, with approval within about 3 hours
  • Standard processing time: around 3 business days
  • No separate service or agency fee, as the application is made directly through the official government portal

Tips for South African travelers

  • Apply only through the official evisa.gov.az site - third-party sites charge extra fees for the same service
  • There are no direct flights from South Africa to Baku; most routes connect via Doha, Dubai or Istanbul
  • Print a physical copy of your e-visa approval in addition to having it on your phone, as border staff sometimes prefer a paper copy
  • Double-check passport number and name spelling match exactly before submitting, since mismatches can cause denial of boarding or entry
