Australia Visa for South Africa Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

South African citizens need a Visitor visa (subclass 600), applied for entirely online via ImmiAccount - there is no sticker or stamp required before travel; the base fee is AUD 150 and standard processing is around a month.

Guide last updated October 21, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the intended period of stay in Australia
  • Digital copy (scan or photo) of your passport bio-data page
  • Evidence of genuine temporary stay: return ticket, travel itinerary, accommodation bookings
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements, payslips)
  • Evidence of ties to South Africa (employment letter, property, family) to show intent to return
  • Health examinations are occasionally requested depending on circumstances, but not standard for short tourist stays
  • Health/travel insurance is strongly recommended though not mandatory for the visa itself

Visa types

  • Subclass 600 Tourist stream - for holiday or visiting family/friends, validity typically 3, 6 or 12 months from grant, each stay up to the period specified by the case officer (commonly 3 months per entry)
  • Subclass 600 Business visitor stream - for short business meetings or conferences
  • Subclass 600 Sponsored Family stream - requires an Australian sponsor, same application portal

How to apply online

  • Create an ImmiAccount at the Department of Home Affairs website (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au)
  • Select Visitor visa (subclass 600) and the relevant stream
  • Complete the online form and upload supporting documents (passport, photos, financial and employment evidence)
  • Pay the fee online by card
  • No biometrics are generally required for South African applicants applying from outside Australia for this subclass
  • The decision is sent by email and linked electronically to your passport - there is no physical visa label; carry a copy of the grant notice when travelling

Fees & processing time

  • Base application fee: AUD 150 (around R1,800) for the Tourist stream
  • No separate service fee, as applications are lodged directly online with the Department of Home Affairs
  • Standard processing time: around 29 days for the majority of applications (75th percentile), though it can range from a few days to several weeks depending on individual circumstances
  • No official express/priority processing option for this visa subclass

Tips for South African travelers

  • Apply at least 6-8 weeks before your planned travel date to allow for processing variability
  • Provide strong evidence of ties to South Africa (job, property, family) - weak ties are a common reason for refusal or requests for more information
  • Keep your ImmiAccount login details safe, as all correspondence and the visa grant notice are delivered there, not by post
  • Double-check that your passport details match exactly what you enter online, since the visa is electronically linked to your passport number
  • If invited for a business trip, ask your host to provide a formal invitation letter, as this strengthens the Business visitor stream application
