German citizens can enter Ukraine visa-free for tourism or business stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period using a valid passport.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the full duration of your stay (a national ID card is not sufficient)
  • No application form needed for stays under 90 days
  • Proof of sufficient funds may be requested at the border
  • Proof of accommodation and onward travel recommended
  • No photo or biometrics required for entry
  • Travel and medical insurance strongly recommended given current wartime conditions, and required by some carriers

Visa types

  • No visa required for tourism, business or family visits up to 90 days per 180-day period
  • Type D national visa required for stays over 90 days, or for work or study, obtained in advance at the Ukrainian embassy in Berlin or consulates in Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg
  • Type D visas are issued for study, employment or long-term residence purposes

Entry conditions

  • Maximum 90 days within any 180-day period
  • No work permitted during the visa-free stay
  • Present your passport, return/onward ticket and proof of accommodation at the border on request
  • Extending the 90-day period inside Ukraine without a change of status is generally not possible
  • Most commercial flights to Ukraine remain suspended — land entry via Poland, Moldova, Romania, Hungary or Slovakia is the common route

  • No processing time since no application is required for short stays
  • Type D long-stay visa: approximately EUR 75-100 depending on category
  • Type D processing time: 10-15 working days at the embassy

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Register your trip with the German embassy in Kyiv or the nearest consulate given the security situation
  • Carry printed proof of accommodation and travel insurance for border checks
  • Do not overstay the 90-day limit — this can result in fines or entry bans
  • Monitor the Auswärtiges Amt for updated travel warnings before and during your trip
  • Allow extra time at land border crossings, where queues can be long
