Spain Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

Visa Free

As an EU citizen, a German national can enter and stay in Spain using only a valid national ID card or passport - no visa is needed under EU freedom of movement.

Guide last updated October 14, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • A valid German national ID card (Personalausweis) or passport - either is sufficient, no visa or additional travel authorization required
  • No minimum passport/ID validity beyond the document's own expiry date
  • No proof of funds, accommodation, or return ticket legally required, though good practice to carry some
  • No photo, biometrics, or application form of any kind
  • No travel insurance required, though EHIC/European Health Insurance Card coverage is recommended for medical access

Visa types

  • Not applicable: as an EU/EEA citizen, Germans do not need any visa, permit, or registration to enter or stay in Spain
  • For stays beyond 90 days or to establish residence, EU citizens register for a "Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Union" (EU citizen registration certificate) at a local immigration office, but this is not a visa
  • No separate "tourist" or "business" visa category exists for EU citizens

Entry conditions

  • Germans may enter Spain and remain indefinitely under EU free movement rules; there is no 90-day limit as there would be for non-EU travelers
  • For stays over 90 days, EU citizens should register with Spain's immigration authorities (Oficina de Extranjeria) and obtain the EU registration certificate, along with an NIE (foreigner identification number) often needed for banking or employment
  • Full right to work, study, or do business without a separate permit
  • No formal immigration checks occur when traveling by land or short-haul air within Schengen; airlines may still check ID at boarding

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee - entry is free under EU freedom of movement
  • EU registration certificate (if staying long-term): small administrative fee (approx. EUR 12-16), processed at the local immigration office
  • No VFS/BLS service applies to EU citizens
  • No processing time for entry itself; the registration certificate appointment and issuance can take a few weeks to schedule in high-demand areas (e.g., Barcelona, Madrid)
  • No express service needed or available for this administrative registration

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Carry your ID card or passport, even though border checks are minimal within Schengen
  • If relocating to Spain long-term, book your immigration office (extranjeria) appointment early, as availability can be limited in popular cities
  • Spain uses the euro, so no currency exchange hassle for German travelers
  • Public healthcare access for short stays requires your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or private travel insurance
  • No customs or immigration delays are expected when crossing by road, rail, or air from Germany
