  • No visa application form for stays under 90 days
  • Return or onward flight ticket

  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not mandatory for entry

Visa types

  • No visa required for tourism or general business visits up to 90 days per visit
  • Longer stays, employment or study require a separate visa (e.g. Critical Skills Work Visa, Study Visa) applied for at a South African mission before travel

Entry conditions

  • German citizens are granted up to 90 days on arrival at any South African port of entry
  • Entry is stamped into the passport by the immigration officer at no cost
  • No paid work is allowed under visa-free entry
  • Extensions can be requested at a Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) office or Department of Home Affairs branch before the 90 days expire

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for entry
  • No processing time - entry is granted immediately at the port of entry
  • Extension applications (if needed): a fee of roughly ZAR 1,520 (about USD 85) applies, with processing taking several weeks

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Ensure your passport has at least one fully blank visa page, not just space in the amendments section - this is strictly enforced
  • Children traveling with only one parent may be asked for an unabridged birth certificate and parental consent letter
  • Apply for extensions well before the 90-day limit; overstaying can result in being declared undesirable and banned from re-entry
  • Keep your entry stamp/date clearly visible in the passport in case of a later visa or extension application
  • Malaria prophylaxis is advisable for travel to Kruger National Park and other northeastern regions
