Guide last updated September 10, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival, with at least one blank page
  • Digital passport photo for the online application
  • Scanned passport bio-data page
  • Details of accommodation and travel itinerary in Somalia
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with risk of transmission
  • Travel health insurance: strongly recommended given limited healthcare infrastructure

Visa types

  • Tourist e-Visa: single entry, typically valid for 30 days from arrival
  • Business e-Visa: single entry, up to 30 days, requires a local business invitation letter
  • NGO/official visits: require additional clearance letters from the relevant Somali ministry

How to apply online

  • Apply through the official Somalia e-visa portal (linked from somalia.gov.so) or an authorized visa service
  • Upload passport bio-page, photo, and travel details, then pay the fee online by card
  • Processing typically takes 3-5 business days; expedited processing may be offered for an extra fee
  • Approval is emailed as a PDF - print it and present it with your passport on arrival at Aden Adde International Airport, Mogadishu
  • Security clearance is required for travel outside Mogadishu; check current advisories before planning inland travel

Fees & processing time

  • E-visa fee: approximately USD 60 for a standard single-entry tourist visa
  • Standard processing: 3-5 business days
  • Expedited processing (where offered): 24-48 hours for an additional fee
  • No separate VFS/BLS office - all handled through the online portal

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Apply at least 1-2 weeks before departure to allow for processing delays
  • Check current German Foreign Office (Auswartiges Amt) travel advisories - Somalia carries a high-risk travel warning
  • Keep printed copies of your e-visa approval, as connectivity to reprint on arrival may be unreliable
  • Common rejection reasons: blurry passport scans, mismatched name spelling, or incomplete itinerary details
  • Coordinate with a local contact or security escort for any travel outside the capital
