German citizens can apply for a Sierra Leone eVisa online before travel or obtain a visa on arrival at Freetown's international airport; fee around USD 160, valid for a single entry of up to 30 days.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry, with at least one blank page
  • Passport-style photo (digital upload for eVisa, physical photo for visa on arrival)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate - mandatory for all travelers, checked on arrival
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the stay
  • Biometrics (photo and fingerprints) captured on arrival

Visa types

  • eVisa: single or multiple entry, applied for online via the Sierra Leone eVisa portal, fee approx. USD 160 (single entry) or USD 200+ (multiple entry), valid for a stay of up to 30 days
  • Visa on arrival: available at Lungi International Airport for travelers who have not pre-arranged an eVisa, fee approx. USD 160-200, single entry, up to 30 days
  • Business visa: similar process to tourist, requires an invitation/sponsor letter from a Sierra Leonean company
  • Extension: a 30-day extension can be requested at the Immigration Department in Freetown

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Lungi International Airport for travelers arriving without a pre-issued eVisa
  • Steps: 1) proceed to the visa desk before the main immigration counter, 2) submit passport, yellow fever certificate, photo, and accommodation proof, 3) pay the fee in USD cash (newer notes recommended), 4) biometrics taken, 5) visa stamp issued, usually within 30-45 minutes
  • Pre-applying for the eVisa online is strongly recommended to avoid long queues at the VOA desk
  • The ferry/speedboat transfer from Lungi airport to Freetown city is a separate, additional cost not covered by the visa

Fees & processing time

  • eVisa fee: approx. USD 160 (single entry), paid online by card
  • Visa on arrival fee: approx. USD 160-200, cash only (USD), at the airport counter
  • No VFS/BLS outsourcing; eVisa applications go through the government's official online portal
  • eVisa processing time: 3-5 working days, so apply at least a week before departure
  • Visa on arrival processing: 30-45 minutes on the spot, but queues can extend this significantly

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Pre-apply for the eVisa to avoid the sometimes chaotic visa-on-arrival queue at Lungi airport
  • Carry your yellow fever certificate at all times; entry can be refused without it
  • Bring clean, newer USD bills for any on-arrival fees, as worn or old notes are sometimes rejected
  • Arrange airport transfer to Freetown in advance, since the journey from Lungi involves a ferry, bridge, or helicopter transfer
  • Common rejection reason for the eVisa: blurry or non-compliant photo uploads - use a plain background and recent photo
