Guide last updated September 9, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry
  • Completed arrival visa form (paper form, or online pre-registration at nepaliss.immigration.gov.np/online, recommended)
  • One passport-size photo
  • Proof of onward/return ticket recommended
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking)
  • Cash or card for the visa fee (USD, EUR, or major currencies accepted; NPR often not accepted for the visa fee)
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, especially for trekking

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival - multiple entry, available for 15, 30, or 90 days
  • Gratis (free) visa - available under specific bilateral arrangements or for children under 10, not standard for German adults
  • Business/other visas - require prior application through the Nepali Embassy in Berlin with an invitation letter

Visa on arrival

  • Pre-fill the arrival form online at the Department of Immigration's website to get a barcode and speed up processing
  • Present passport, form/barcode, and photo at the visa counter at Tribhuvan International Airport or a land border (e.g. Kakarbhitta, Birgunj)
  • Pay the visa fee at the bank counter (cash in USD/EUR/major currencies) and get the receipt stamped
  • Immigration officer stamps the visa into the passport
  • Processing typically takes 15-45 minutes depending on airport traffic

Fees & processing time

  • 15-day multiple entry: USD 30
  • 30-day multiple entry: USD 50
  • 90-day multiple entry: USD 125
  • No separate service fee at the airport
  • Extensions inside Nepal: processed at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu, fee approx USD 3/day plus a USD 25 service charge, same-day to 1 working day processing

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Pre-register online before travel to significantly shorten the airport visa queue
  • Bring exact cash in USD or EUR, as currency exchange counters near the visa desk can have long queues
  • Common rejection reason: incomplete arrival form or missing photo
  • If trekking in restricted areas (e.g. Upper Mustang, Manaslu), a separate trekking permit is required in addition to the visa
  • No current bilateral travel advisories between Germany and Nepal beyond general safety notices for trekking regions
