Japan Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Germans can enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism or business — just a valid passport, and pre-registering trip details via Visit Japan Web is recommended for faster arrival.

Guide last updated September 9, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the intended duration of stay in Japan
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation for the stay
  • Sufficient funds for the visit
  • Completed disembarkation card and customs declaration (paper or digital via Visit Japan Web)
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and facial photo) taken at the airport immigration counter on arrival — standard for all foreign visitors
  • Travel health insurance is strongly recommended given Japan's high medical costs, though not legally mandatory

Visa types

  • Not applicable for tourism/business stays up to 90 days — Germany is on Japan's visa exemption list under a bilateral reciprocal arrangement
  • Longer-stay categories (work, student, spouse) require an application at the Japanese Embassy in Berlin or one of its consulates before travel, each with its own Certificate of Eligibility process

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days visa-free for tourism, visiting friends/family, or short business trips (no paid work)
  • No paid employment allowed under the visa-free entry
  • Pre-register trip and customs details via the Visit Japan Web portal before arrival to speed up immigration
  • Extension beyond 90 days is not possible under the visa-exempt entry — travelers must leave and, if needed, apply for a different visa category for a longer stay

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee — entry is fully visa-free
  • No application processing time; only the free Visit Japan Web pre-registration, which takes a few minutes online
  • No express/priority option needed since there is no visa process

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Complete Visit Japan Web registration a few days before departure to get a QR code for faster immigration and customs clearance
  • Make sure your passport won't expire during the trip — airlines may still ask for it to be valid beyond the return date
  • The 90-day visa-free period cannot be extended from inside Japan; plan trip length accordingly
  • No particular bilateral travel restrictions currently apply to German passport holders
