Iraq Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

German citizens need an e-Visa for federal Iraq, applied for online at evisa.gov.iq; the tourist e-visa costs about USD 75-77 and is typically processed within 3-5 business days.

Guide last updated September 9, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least one blank page
  • Completed online e-Visa application at the official portal, evisa.gov.iq
  • Digital passport-style photo (color, plain background) uploaded during the application
  • Scanned copy of your passport bio page
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) uploaded or available on request
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • No in-person biometrics required for the e-Visa; photo/fingerprint capture may occur at the airport immigration desk
  • Travel health insurance is recommended given the region's security situation

Visa types

  • e-Tourist visa: single entry, valid for use within 60 days of issue, permits a stay of up to 60 days, approximate fee USD 75-77
  • e-Business visa: similar validity and stay length as the tourist e-visa, requires an invitation letter from an Iraqi company, approximate fee USD 75-77 plus documentation
  • Note: this covers federal Iraq (Baghdad and the south/center); the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region (KRI, including Erbil and Sulaymaniyah) issues its own separate visa on arrival for many nationalities including Germany, valid only within the KRI unless upgraded
  • Longer stays or work require a separate visa applied for through the Iraqi embassy in Berlin before travel

How to apply online

  • Apply through the official portal, evisa.gov.iq, ideally at least 1-2 weeks before travel
  • Fill in personal details, passport information, and trip details (port of entry, purpose, dates)
  • Upload your digital photo and passport bio page scan
  • Pay the visa fee online by credit/debit card (fee is generally non-refundable if rejected)
  • Standard processing takes about 3-5 business days; approval arrives by email as a PDF to print
  • Present the printed e-Visa approval along with your passport at immigration on arrival at Baghdad International Airport or another designated federal port of entry

Fees & processing time

  • e-Tourist visa: approximately USD 75-77
  • e-Business visa: approximately USD 75-77, plus company invitation letter requirements
  • No separate service fee since the application goes directly through the government e-visa portal
  • Standard processing: 3-5 business days; allow extra time and apply 1-2 weeks ahead during busier periods
  • Kurdistan Region visa on arrival (if flying directly into Erbil or Sulaymaniyah instead) is free for many nationalities including Germany for stays up to 30 days, separate from the federal e-visa system

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Decide whether you are traveling to federal Iraq or specifically to the Kurdistan Region, since they have separate visa systems - the KRI's visa on arrival does not by default permit travel into federal Iraq
  • Check current German Foreign Office travel advisories closely before booking, as security conditions vary significantly by region within Iraq
  • Apply for the e-visa well in advance and keep both digital and printed copies, since some airlines in Germany require proof of a valid visa before check-in
  • Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended given the limited local healthcare infrastructure in many areas
  • Registering your trip with the German embassy in Baghdad (or the honorary consulate structure for the KRI) is advisable for independent travelers
