Iraq Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

German citizens apply for Iraq's federal e-Visa online at evisa.gov.iq before travel; the fee is around USD 77, processing takes 3-5 business days, and it is valid for a single entry stay of up to 60 days (the Kurdistan Region uses a separate on-arrival visa).

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
  • Digital passport photo (white background, JPEG) uploaded with the online application
  • Scanned passport bio page
  • Hotel booking or local sponsor/invitation letter details
  • Return or onward ticket
  • No fixed minimum funds requirement, but be ready to show proof of accommodation and funds if questioned on arrival
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are captured on arrival at Baghdad, Basra or Erbil/Najaf international airports

Visa types

  • Tourist e-Visa: single entry, valid 60 days from issue, stay up to 60 days, fee approximately USD 77
  • Business e-Visa: single or multiple entry, requires an Iraqi sponsoring company letter, fee from USD 150
  • Kurdistan Region on-arrival visa: a separate system for travelers flying directly into Erbil or Sulaymaniyah, free for most EU nationals including Germany for stays up to 30 days, but it does not permit onward travel into federal Iraq without further formalities

How to apply online

  • Apply at the official portal evisa.gov.iq, create an account, and fill in personal and trip details
  • Upload the passport bio page scan and digital photo, then pay the fee online by card (approximately USD 77 for the tourist e-Visa)
  • Processing time: 3-5 business days; approval arrives by email as a PDF e-Visa to print and carry
  • Present the printed e-Visa plus passport at passport control on arrival for stamping
  • Entry points: Baghdad, Basra and Najaf international airports for the federal e-Visa

  • Kurdistan Region on-arrival entry: free for German citizens, processed in a few minutes at Erbil or Sulaymaniyah airport

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Decide your entry point before applying - a Kurdistan Region arrival visa does not permit travel into the rest of Iraq
  • Register your travel with the German Federal Foreign Office's crisis prevention list given the security situation
  • Common rejection reason: mismatched or blurry passport photo or scan uploads
  • Carry both a printed and a digital copy of the approved e-Visa
  • Extensions beyond 60 days require an in-country application at the Directorate of Residency before the visa expires
