German citizens can obtain a visa on arrival at Iran's main international airports, or apply for an e-visa in advance; the fee is roughly EUR 75-80 for a 30-day single-entry stay.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with no Israeli stamps or visas (these can lead to entry refusal)
  • Mandatory travel/health insurance valid for Iran - if you don't have your own, insurance can be purchased at the airport for around EUR 15
  • Passport-style photo (one, though this is sometimes waived if applying via e-visa in advance)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) may be requested
  • Cash (euros are widely accepted) to pay the visa-on-arrival fee, since card payment is generally unavailable due to international sanctions on Iran's banking system
  • Biometrics: photo and sometimes fingerprints taken at the visa counter

Visa types

  • Visa on Arrival (tourist): single entry, valid for a stay of up to 30 days, fee approximately EUR 75-80, extendable once locally for an additional 30 days
  • e-Visa (applied in advance via e_visa.mfa.ir): same validity and stay length as the visa on arrival, but pre-approved online to reduce airport queue time and avoid on-the-spot rejection
  • Note that VOA/e-visa access has historically been restricted or suspended for citizens of the US, UK, and Canada, but remains generally available to German passport holders
  • Longer stays, business, or work require a separate visa applied for through the Iranian embassy in Berlin before travel

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in Tehran and several other major airports including Shiraz and Isfahan; availability at land borders is more limited and less reliable
  • On arrival, proceed to the visa counter before regular immigration, complete an arrival form, present your passport and travel insurance proof
  • Pay the fee (approximately EUR 75-80) in cash - euros are the most reliably accepted currency
  • Processing typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on queue length and time of day
  • Applying for the e-visa in advance via the official e_visa.mfa.ir portal is strongly recommended over relying solely on VOA, since it locks in approval before you fly and speeds up the airport process significantly
