India Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

German citizens need an e-Visa for India, applied for online before travel through India's official e-Visa portal; fees and validity depend on the category chosen.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Digital passport-style photo (white background)
  • Scanned passport bio page
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of funds may be requested
  • No biometrics for the e-visa itself (biometrics are only required for a regular long-term visa)
  • Travel health insurance recommended
  • No physical embassy visit needed once the e-visa is approved

Visa types

  • e-Tourist visa: 30-day, 1-year, or 5-year validity options, multiple entry, fees roughly US$25-80 depending on validity
  • e-Business visa: 1-year multiple entry, approx US$80
  • e-Medical visa and e-Medical Attendant visa: 60-day triple entry, approx US$80-85
  • Regular sticker visas (student, employment, etc.) are handled separately through VFS Global in Germany

How to apply online

  • Apply via the official portal indianvisaonline.gov.in
  • Create an account and complete the application with passport and photo uploads
  • Pay the fee online by card, in US dollars
  • Standard processing is typically within 72 hours, though it can take longer during peak season
  • Approval (ETA) is emailed as a PDF to print and carry along with your passport — immigration stamps the passport on arrival at the airport

  • e-Tourist 30-day: approx US$25
  • e-Tourist 1-year: approx US$40-45
  • e-Tourist 5-year: approx US$80 (plus bank/processing charges)
  • e-Business: approx US$80
  • Standard processing: about 72 hours; applying at least 4-7 days before travel is recommended
  • No official express service, though some third-party agencies offer expedited assistance for a premium

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Apply well before travel, as the portal occasionally experiences delays during peak tourist season (October-March)
  • Double-check the photo and passport scan specifications, as mismatched formats are a common rejection reason
  • Keep multiple printed copies of the e-visa approval
  • The e-visa is only valid for entry through designated airports and seaports, not all land borders
