Hungary Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

Visa Free

As an EU member state, Hungary allows German citizens to enter with just a national ID card or passport under EU freedom of movement - no visa needed, and there is no limit on the length of stay.

Guide last updated September 9, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • A valid German national ID card (Personalausweis) or passport - either document is sufficient under EU free movement rules
  • No visa, entry permit, or advance registration is required
  • No proof of funds, accommodation, or return ticket is required at the border, since Germany and Hungary are both in the Schengen area with no routine border checks
  • No forms to complete for entry
  • No biometrics or photos required
  • Travel health insurance is not mandatory since the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) covers necessary medical treatment during your stay

Visa types

  • No visa applies - this is an EU freedom of movement route
  • German citizens may live, work, study, or retire in Hungary indefinitely without a visa or residence permit for the first 3 months, and only need to register locally (not obtain a visa) for stays beyond 3 months
  • There is no separate tourist, business, or work visa category, since EU citizens are exempt from Hungary's general visa regime entirely

Entry conditions

  • No limit on the length of stay for tourism or short visits within the Schengen free-movement zone
  • Full right to work, study, or start a business without a permit
  • For stays longer than 3 months, EU citizens must register their address with the local Hungarian immigration authority (Bevándorlási és Menekültügyi Hivatal / National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing) - this is a registration, not a visa application
  • No exit stamp or entry stamp is placed in your passport when crossing between Germany and Hungary, since both are within the Schengen internal border-free zone
  • Carry your ID card or passport at all times, since spot checks can occur even without routine border controls

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee, since none is required
  • Registration for stays beyond 3 months: a nominal administrative fee (typically a few thousand HUF, roughly EUR 5-15) at the local immigration office
  • No processing time for entry - it is immediate
  • Registration for longer stays is usually processed within a few weeks of application

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Always carry a valid ID card or passport, even though border checks are rare within Schengen - Hungary can still carry out temporary checks
  • If moving to Hungary for more than 3 months, register with the local immigration office promptly to avoid administrative issues
  • Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), issued by your German health insurer, covers state healthcare during your stay
  • This is a genuine freedom-of-movement route under the EU treaties - it is not a Schengen 90/180-day tourist allowance, since German citizens can stay indefinitely
  • If you plan to work in Hungary long-term, check local tax and social security registration requirements separately from the immigration registration
