Hong Kong Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

Visa Free

German citizens can visit Hong Kong visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism or business.

Guide last updated September 9, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 1 month beyond your intended stay (Hong Kong's requirement is lighter than many destinations, but airlines often ask for 6 months' validity for connecting flights)
  • No visa or entry permit required in advance for tourist or short business stays
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Proof of sufficient funds if requested by immigration
  • No biometrics required for standard entry, though facial recognition e-Channels are available for eligible travelers
  • Travel health insurance is not mandatory but recommended

Visa types

  • Visitor entry (visa-free): free, granted on arrival for up to 90 days, covers tourism, family visits, and general business activities such as meetings and negotiations
  • No paid employment or study is permitted on the visa-free entry
  • Formal work, study, or long-term residence requires a separate visa/permit applied for through the Hong Kong Immigration Department before travel

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days per visit, granted automatically on arrival with no application needed
  • No paid employment permitted; attending business meetings, negotiating contracts, or short training sessions is allowed
  • Officers at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details, though checks are generally light for German passport holders
  • Extensions of stay can be requested at the Hong Kong Immigration Department before the visa-free period expires, though these are granted only in limited circumstances
  • Overstaying is treated seriously and can result in fines or detention

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for visa-free entry
  • No advance processing time - entry is granted immediately at the airport
  • Extension of stay application at the Immigration Department: modest fee (a few hundred HKD, roughly USD 20-40), processed over several working days, and only granted for valid reasons (e.g. medical emergency)
  • No service/agency fees since no visa application is required for tourist stays

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Keep your boarding pass and any onward ticket handy, since airlines checking in passengers to Hong Kong sometimes verify onward travel before boarding
  • Register for the Hong Kong e-Channel self-service immigration clearance on arrival if eligible, which speeds up entry significantly
  • This 90-day allowance is separate from mainland China, which has its own, stricter visa requirements - a separate Chinese visa is needed if you plan to cross into the mainland
  • This stay does not count against your Schengen 90/180-day allowance
  • Direct flights from Frankfurt and Munich to Hong Kong are available on Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific, making this one of the more convenient long-haul routes for German travelers
