German citizens can get a Djibouti visa on arrival at Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport or apply for an e-Visa in advance; fee from USD 35, processing instant on arrival or 2-5 days online.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least one blank page
  • Completed arrival form (provided on the plane or at the airport counter)
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Passport photo (not always checked for the airport VOA, but required if you use the e-Visa route)
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and a photo are taken at the immigration desk on arrival
  • Travel health insurance is recommended; proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you have transited through a yellow-fever endemic country

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival: single entry, valid 1 month, from USD 35
  • Business visa on arrival: single entry, valid 1 month, from USD 45, requires an invitation letter from a Djiboutian company
  • Multiple-entry visa: up to 3 months validity, from USD 90, best arranged via e-Visa in advance
  • Transit visa: for stays under 48 hours, often waived if staying airside

  • Available at Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport (JIB) for German passport holders
  • Join the visa counter before passport control, pay the fee in USD or Euro cash, and collect your stamp
  • Fee: USD 35 for one month single entry, USD 90 for three months multiple entry
  • Queues can run 20-45 minutes depending on flight arrivals; have exact cash ready as change is limited
  • Alternative: apply online through Djibouti's e-Visa portal (evisa.gouv.dj) 2-5 days before travel to skip the counter

  • Visa on arrival fee: USD 35 (1 month) or USD 90 (3 months), payable in cash (USD or EUR)
  • e-Visa fee: USD 35-90 depending on validity, plus a small online processing charge, paid by card
  • No separate service agency fee for the airport VOA
  • Standard e-Visa processing time: 2-5 business days
  • No express/priority e-Visa option currently offered

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Apply for the e-Visa at least a week before departure if you want to avoid the airport queue
  • Carry small denomination USD or EUR notes, as the VOA desk often cannot make large change
  • Common rejection reason for e-Visa applications: blurry passport scans or mismatched names between the form and passport
  • A yellow fever certificate is checked on arrival if you've recently visited East or Central Africa
  • Extensions beyond the granted validity must be requested at the Direction Nationale de la Sécurité Publique in Djibouti City before the visa expires
