German citizens can enter Chile visa-free for tourism or business for up to 90 days - simply present a valid passport on arrival; no advance application needed.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the stay (6 months validity recommended, not formally required)
  • No visa or online form required for stays up to 90 days
  • Proof of onward or return ticket may be requested by the airline or immigration
  • Proof of accommodation and sufficient funds may be requested on arrival
  • Tourist card (Tarjeta de Turismo) issued free on arrival - keep it, as it must be surrendered on departure
  • Biometrics: photo and fingerprint sometimes taken at major airports (e.g. Santiago) as part of standard entry procedures
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not mandatory

Visa types

  • Not applicable for short tourism or business stays - visa-free entry covers both purposes for up to 90 days
  • Longer stays, work or study require a visa applied for in advance at the Chilean consulate in Germany

Entry conditions

  • Visa-free entry for up to 90 days per visit, for tourism or business
  • Paid work is not permitted under visa-free or tourist entry
  • Must present the tourist card received on arrival when departing - a replacement can be obtained from the Policia Internacional if lost, for a small fee
  • Extension: a one-time extension of the 90-day period can be requested from the Jefatura Nacional de Extranjeria y Migracion before the initial period expires, for a fee of approx. USD 100

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Common issue: assuming the 90 days automatically renews - it does not; departing and quickly re-entering may be questioned by immigration
  • No advance booking or portal needed - go directly to passport control
  • No current bilateral travel advisories affecting German tourists
  • For work or an extended stay, arrange the correct visa with the Chilean consulate in Germany (e.g. Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich) before traveling
