Canada Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

German citizens flying to Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), applied for online in minutes; the eTA costs CAD 7 and is usually approved within minutes, though it can take up to 72 hours, and remains valid for 5 years or until your passport expires.

Guide last updated September 8, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • A valid German passport (biometric e-passport)
  • A valid email address and credit/debit card for the online application
  • Basic personal, passport, and travel details entered into the eTA application form
  • No photo or biometrics required for the eTA itself
  • Travel health insurance is recommended though not mandatory
  • No supporting documents need to be uploaded for most straightforward applications

Visa types

  • Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): required for German citizens arriving in Canada by air for tourism, business, or transit; not required for entry by land or sea from the United States
  • Study or work permits: required separately for stays involving study or employment, applied for online or through a visa application centre before travel
  • The eTA itself does not require a separate tourist visa - it functions as Canada's visa-waiver authorization for eligible nationalities

How to apply online

  • Apply exclusively through the official Government of Canada eTA website (canada.ca) - do not use third-party sites, which often charge inflated fees
  • Enter your passport number, personal details, and answer a short questionnaire
  • Pay the CAD 7 fee by credit or debit card
  • Most applications are approved within minutes; some take up to 72 hours if additional review is needed
  • The eTA is electronically linked to your passport, so no physical document or stamp is issued - just bring the same passport used in the application

Fees & processing time

  • eTA fee: CAD 7 (about EUR 4.70)
  • Processing time: usually instant to a few minutes; can take up to 72 hours in some cases
  • No express or expedited option needed, given the already fast standard processing
  • The eTA is valid for 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, allowing multiple entries during that period

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Apply for the eTA before booking non-refundable flights, ideally at least 72 hours in advance, in case of delayed approval
  • Double-check that you're on the official canada.ca site, since many lookalike commercial sites charge extra fees for the same low-cost service
  • If your passport is renewed after getting the eTA, you'll need a new eTA linked to the new passport number
  • The eTA does not guarantee entry - Canadian border officers still assess admissibility on arrival, so carry proof of onward travel and sufficient funds
  • If arriving by land or sea from the US, no eTA is required, only a valid passport
