German citizens can travel to Brazil visa-free for tourism or business for up to 90 days, renewable to a maximum of 180 days within any 12-month period.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date
  • No visa, application, or photo required for visa-exempt entry
  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay may be requested
  • No biometrics taken for visa-exempt entry (fingerprints/photo are taken for some visa categories, not for tourist visa-free entry)
  • Travel health insurance is recommended though not mandatory
  • Yellow fever vaccination is not required when arriving directly from Germany

Visa types

  • Visa-free tourist/business entry: no fee, stamped on arrival, up to 90 days, extendable once for another 90 days (maximum 180 days per 12-month period)
  • Work/study/resident visas: required for longer stays or employment, applied for in advance at the Brazilian consulate in Germany
  • Note: Brazil reinstated visa requirements for US, Canadian, and Australian citizens in 2025 on a reciprocity basis, but EU citizens including Germans remain visa-exempt for tourism

  • A one-time extension of up to another 90 days can be requested at the Federal Police (Policia Federal) before the initial period expires, bringing the maximum to 180 days in any rolling 12-month period

  • No processing time, as no advance application is required
  • Extension application at the Policia Federal: modest administrative fee (around BRL 200-300), processed same day in most cases

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Monitor Brazilian visa policy announcements before travel, since reciprocity-based changes have been introduced for some nationalities in recent years
  • Apply for your 90-day extension at the Policia Federal at least a few days before your original stamp expires, as queues can be long in major cities
  • Keep a copy of your entry stamp date, since the 180-day annual cap is tracked cumulatively
  • No embassy visit is required for a standard visit - this remains one of the easiest routes for German tourists
