  • No biometrics taken online; fingerprints and photo are captured on arrival at Paro Airport or land border posts

Visa types

  • Tourist visa clearance: single entry, typically valid for the length of your booked itinerary, fee USD 40 plus SDF of USD 100 per person per night
  • Business visa: requires a local sponsoring company, similar fee structure
  • Regional visa (for Indian, Bangladeshi, Maldivian nationals): not applicable to German citizens, who always need the standard tourist visa route

  • Submit your passport scan, photo, and itinerary details
  • Pay the SDF (USD 100 per night) and the USD 40 visa fee online by card

  • Visa clearance is issued electronically; present the printout plus your passport on arrival, where an entry stamp/visa sticker is affixed

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Book through a reputable, licensed Bhutanese tour operator (listed on the Department of Tourism site) to avoid delays with visa clearance
  • Budget for the SDF separately from your tour package cost, as it is a government fee, not a service fee
  • Flights into Paro are limited to a few airlines (Drukair, Bhutan Airlines) - book these early, as they sell out in peak season (March-May, September-November)
  • Common issues are mismatched passport details between the visa application and the physical passport - double-check spelling of names
  • There is no extension process for tourist stays - plan your full itinerary before applying
