Bhutan Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

German citizens must obtain a Bhutan e-visa in advance, typically arranged online through a licensed tour operator or the Department of Immigration's e-visa portal; the visa fee is USD 40 and the Sustainable Development Fee is USD 100 per night, with approval usually issued within 3-5 working days.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure from Bhutan
  • Digital passport-style photo (35x45mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Confirmed itinerary and accommodation booked through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or hotel
  • Proof of payment of the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
  • Return or onward flight ticket, usually on Drukair or Bhutan Airlines (the only carriers serving Paro)
  • Travel health insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended
  • No biometrics are collected in advance; fingerprints/photo may be taken on arrival at Paro International Airport or a land border crossing

Visa types

  • Tourist e-visa: single entry, must be used within 3 months of issue, typically issued for the length of your booked stay (extendable in-country through your tour operator)
  • Business visa: requires a formal invitation/sponsor letter from a Bhutanese company, processed the same way as the tourist e-visa
  • Official/diplomatic visas: arranged government-to-government, not applicable to most travelers
  • All visa types are approved online before travel and physically stamped into the passport on arrival

How to apply online

  • Apply through the Department of Immigration's official online visa system (online.dhi.gov.bt) directly, or have your licensed Bhutanese tour operator submit the application on your behalf
  • Upload your passport bio page, photo, and travel itinerary
  • Pay the visa fee (USD 40) and the Sustainable Development Fee (USD 100 per night for adults) online by card
  • Processing normally takes 3-5 working days; you receive an approval letter by email
  • Bring a printed copy of the approval letter; the actual visa is stamped in your passport on arrival at Paro Airport or an approved land border (e.g. Phuentsholing)

  • Visa processing fee: USD 40 (about EUR 37)
  • Sustainable Development Fee: USD 100 per person per night (about EUR 92); discounted rates apply for children aged 6-12
  • For a typical 7-night trip, total government fees run to roughly USD 740 per adult, on top of tour costs
  • Standard processing time: 3-5 working days
  • No official express service, but tour operators can often expedite in urgent cases

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Apply at least 2-3 weeks before travel, and earlier during the peak seasons of March-May and September-November
  • Common rejection reasons: mismatched passport details between application and passport, incomplete SDF payment, or no confirmed accommodation/itinerary
  • Only book through a tour operator licensed by the Tourism Council of Bhutan to avoid delays
  • Since 2022, independent travel without a compulsory guide is allowed for most areas, but a licensed operator still handles the visa application
  • Extensions beyond your approved dates must be arranged in-country through your tour operator before the current visa expires
