Guide last updated September 8, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the intended stay in Belize
  • No visa application form required for visa-free entry
  • Return or onward ticket required
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) recommended
  • Sufficient funds for the stay may be checked at the border
  • No photo requirement since no visa is applied for
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not mandatory

Visa types

  • Visa-free tourist entry: up to 30 days initially, extendable monthly up to 6 months total, single or multiple entries, no fee for initial entry
  • Business visa: required only for specific business activities beyond meetings; apply via the Belize Consulate; fee varies
  • Work permit: required for employment, sponsored by a Belizean employer, processed through the Immigration and Nationality Department before or after arrival

Entry conditions

  • Initial stay of up to 30 days granted on arrival
  • No employment or paid local work allowed under visa-free status without a separate work permit
  • Extensions can be obtained monthly at the Immigration Department in Belmopan or Belize City, up to a maximum of 6 months total per year
  • Each monthly extension carries a fee, increasing progressively the longer the stay continues
  • Overstaying without extension can result in fines assessed on departure

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the initial 30-day visa-free entry
  • Monthly extension fees: approximately BZD 50 (~USD 25) for the first month, increasing for subsequent months, up to BZD 200+ (~USD 100+) for later extensions
  • No VFS/BLS intermediary; extensions handled directly at Immigration Department offices
  • Standard extension processing: same day to a few days
  • No express service typically needed given same-day processing

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Plan extension visits to the Immigration Department in advance if staying longer than 30 days, since fees increase with each renewal
  • Keep all extension receipts, as they may be checked on departure
  • Since there is no German embassy in Belize, consular support comes from the German Embassy in Guatemala City or the honorary consul in Belize
  • Confirm accepted payment methods at the Immigration office before visiting, as cash in local currency is often preferred
  • Hurricane season (June-November) can affect travel plans; check advisories before booking
