Afghanistan Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

German citizens need a visa to enter Afghanistan, applied for through the Afghan Embassy in Berlin — note that Germany's Foreign Office advises against all travel to Afghanistan due to the security situation.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond entry with 2 blank pages
  • Completed visa application form
  • 2 passport photos (35x45mm, white background)
  • Proof of accommodation or an invitation letter from a sponsor in Afghanistan
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Bank statement showing sufficient funds
  • Travel health insurance strongly recommended — reliable medical care is extremely limited

Visa types

  • Tourist visa: single entry, 30 days, approx. €70-90
  • Business visa: multiple entry, 90 days, requires an invitation letter from an Afghan company, approx. €120
  • Journalist visa: requires accreditation from the Government Media and Information Center
  • Transit visa: 7 days, for onward travel only

How to apply

  • Apply through the Afghan Embassy in Berlin (consular section), appointment required
  • Submit documents in person or by registered post
  • The evisa.mfa.gov.af online portal has been intermittently operational since the 2021 change of government — confirm current availability with the embassy before relying on it
  • Standard processing is 5-10 working days; express service (2-3 days) available for an extra fee
  • Interviews are occasionally required for business visas

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks ahead given reduced embassy staffing
  • A common rejection reason is an incomplete or unverifiable invitation letter
  • Check the Auswärtiges Amt travel warning before booking any trip
  • Germany has no embassy in Kabul since 2021 — register with the German Embassy in Islamabad for consular assistance
  • Visa extensions inside Afghanistan are handled by the Ministry of Interior in Kabul and are difficult to obtain
