Guide last updated September 23, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry, with at least 2 blank pages.
  • No visa application form required for the visa-exempt entry; an arrival card is completed on arrival
  • Proof of onward/return ticket may be requested
  • Proof of accommodation may be requested
  • No photo required for the visa-free entry stamp
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo may be taken at immigration on arrival
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, and a yellow fever certificate is required if arriving from a country with risk of transmission

Visa types

  • Not applicable in the usual sense - French citizens receive a free visa-exempt entry stamp on arrival for tourism, valid for a single stay of up to 30 days. An optional eVisa pre-registration exists via evisa.gov.mw for travelers who prefer to pre-clear online, but it is not mandatory for French nationals. Work or extended-stay purposes require a separate permit.

Entry conditions

  • French citizens may stay visa-free for up to 30 days per visit for tourism purposes
  • No work is permitted under the visa-exempt entry - a work permit is required separately
  • Show a valid passport at the border post or airport (Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, or Chileka International Airport in Blantyre)
  • Extensions beyond 30 days can be requested at the Department of Immigration in Lilongwe or Blantyre before the initial period expires

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: none for the visa-exempt 30-day entry
  • Optional eVisa pre-registration: free or low nominal fee if used, though generally unnecessary for French nationals
  • Total cost: free in most cases
  • Standard processing: immediate at the border/airport
  • No express option needed given there is no mandatory advance application

Tips for France travelers

  • No advance application is needed, though pre-registering online at evisa.gov.mw can slightly speed up arrival processing
  • Bring a yellow fever certificate if arriving from or via a country with transmission risk, as this is checked on entry
  • No embassy or VFS/BLS visit is needed for a standard tourist stay
  • Check current French Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advisories for specific regions
  • If more than 30 days are needed, request an extension at an immigration office in Malawi before the initial period expires
