Guide last updated September 23, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry, with at least 2 blank pages.
  • Sponsorship/invitation letter from a Libyan travel agency, company, or individual sponsor (required to initiate the e-Visa)
  • Completed online application form
  • Proof of accommodation for the trip
  • 1-2 recent passport-size photos (digital upload for the online application)
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo typically collected on arrival
  • Travel health insurance: strongly recommended given very limited medical infrastructure and security risks

Visa types

  • Tourist/visit e-Visa: single entry, typically valid for a stay of up to 30 days, fee approx USD 70-100, requires a local sponsor
  • Business e-Visa: single or multiple entry, requires a formal invitation from a Libyan company, fee approx USD 100-150
  • Both types are processed online via the sponsor's application on the applicant's behalf, given the security situation

How to apply online

  • Arrange a registered Libyan sponsor (travel agency or host company) before starting the application, as self-service applications are not accepted
  • The sponsor submits the e-Visa request through the relevant Libyan authority's online portal
  • Fee is paid online or via the sponsor, typically in USD
  • Processing takes approximately 5-10 business days once the sponsor's request is filed
  • Approval is typically sent as an electronic authorization letter to present alongside the passport on arrival, with the physical visa stamp issued at the port of entry

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: approx USD 70-150 depending on visa type and sponsor's service charge
  • Sponsor/agency service fee: often bundled into the total, typically USD 30-80 on top of the government fee
  • Total estimated cost: USD 100-230
  • Standard processing: 5-10 business days once the sponsor files the request
  • Express processing: rarely available given the security and administrative situation; budget extra time

Tips for France travelers

  • Start the process well in advance (3-4 weeks) since a local sponsor is mandatory and can take time to arrange
  • Common rejection/delay reasons: missing or invalid sponsorship documentation, passport with damage or insufficient validity
  • Check the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advisory before planning any trip - Libya is currently subject to strong travel warnings advising against travel to most of the country
  • No VFS/BLS center is used; all coordination goes through the sponsor and Libyan authorities directly
  • Extensions inside Libya require the sponsor's continued involvement and are handled through local immigration offices
