What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages
  • A digital passport-style photo (white background) for the online application
  • A scanned copy of your passport bio page
  • Proof of onward or return travel and accommodation details for the application
  • A valid email address and a payment card for the online fee
  • No biometrics required for the e-Visa; a facial photo and fingerprints are collected only if applying for a physical visa

Visa types

  • e-Tourist visa: 30 days (double entry, approx 25 US dollars), 1 year (multiple entry, approx 40 US dollars), or 5 years (multiple entry, approx 80 US dollars), each allowing stays of up to 90 days per visit (180 days for the 1-year and 5-year options on continuous stay rules)
  • e-Business visa: 1 year multiple entry, approx 80 US dollars, requires a business justification
  • e-Medical visa: for medical treatment, requires a hospital invitation letter
  • Regular sticker visa: available through VFS Global for purposes not covered by e-Visa categories (e.g., long-term study, journalist visas)

How to apply online

  • Apply at the official Indian e-Visa portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in), completing the form and uploading your photo and passport scan
  • Pay the fee online by credit or debit card
  • Standard processing: within 72 hours, though applying at least 4 to 7 days before travel is recommended
  • No express service — processing time is largely fixed, though early application avoids last-minute issues
  • The approved e-Visa is emailed as a PDF; print it and carry it along with your passport, as it is checked at designated e-Visa entry airports and seaports
