Chile Visa for France Citizens 2026

Visa Free

French citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in Chile; only a valid passport is required, and Chile has abolished the reciprocity fee once charged to some nationalities.

Guide last updated September 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the intended stay (no minimum post-stay validity is enforced, but 6 months is advisable)
  • No visa application form needed for tourism
  • Proof of onward or return ticket, occasionally requested by airlines or immigration
  • Proof of sufficient funds, rarely checked but good to carry
  • No photo requirements for entry
  • Biometrics: not routinely collected for short tourist stays
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not mandatory

Visa types

  • No visa category applies for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business meetings. Longer stays, work, or study require applying for a temporary residence visa (Visa Sujeta a Contrato, Visa de Estudiante, or similar) through a Chilean consulate in France before travel, since these categories cannot be obtained visa-free or converted after arrival for stays over 90 days.

Entry conditions

  • French citizens may stay in Chile for up to 90 days without a visa for tourism or short business visits. Paid work is not permitted under this status. On arrival, the border officer stamps the passport with the authorized stay length; travelers should keep the entry stamp or the Tarjeta Única Migratoria record, which may be checked on departure. A one-time extension of up to 90 additional days can be requested from the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones before the initial period expires, for a fee.

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee, since no visa is required for stays up to 90 days
  • No service fee, as there is no application process for entry
  • Extension fee (if requested inside Chile): approximately CLP 30,000-50,000 (around USD 35-55)
  • Processing time for entry: immediate, handled at passport control
  • No express option needed given there is no pre-approval process

Tips for France travelers

  • Since no visa is needed, the main preparation is simply ensuring passport validity and having proof of onward travel ready for the airline
  • A common issue is airlines requesting an onward ticket before boarding, even though Chilean immigration itself rarely enforces this strictly
  • Extensions should be requested at least a few days before the 90-day limit expires, at a Servicio Nacional de Migraciones office
  • Overstaying can result in a fine on departure and possible entry restrictions on future visits
  • No embassy or VFS visit is needed for short stays, making this one of the simplest South American destinations for French travelers
