Bulgaria Visa for France Citizens 2026

Visa Free

French citizens do not need a visa for Bulgaria and can enter with just a valid national ID card or passport under EU freedom of movement, with no limit on length of stay.

Guide last updated September 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Valid French national ID card or passport (no minimum validity period required, EU freedom of movement applies)
  • No visa, entry form, or eVisa of any kind
  • No proof of funds or return ticket required at the border
  • No biometrics collection for entry
  • Travel health insurance not mandatory; the European Health Insurance Card (Carte Vitale/EHIC) covers reciprocal state healthcare
  • No passport photo needed for entry

Visa types

  • Not applicable: as an EU citizen you are not entering under any visa category
  • You are exercising the EU right of free movement, which allows entry, residence and work in Bulgaria without a permit
  • For stays beyond 3 months, EU citizens must register with the local municipality for a certificate of registration, not a visa

Entry conditions

  • Unlimited stay: EU freedom of movement (Treaty on the Functioning of the EU) means there is no 90-day cap for French citizens, even though Bulgaria's Schengen integration (air/sea borders since March 2024, land borders since January 2025) primarily affects border-check procedures rather than the underlying free-movement right
  • Full right to work, study or reside without a work permit
  • Show your ID card or passport for a quick check, since full Schengen abolition of checks is still being phased in at land borders

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee: entry is free of charge
  • No processing time: entry is immediate at the border
  • Municipal registration (if staying over 3 months) is free or a nominal administrative fee

Tips for France travelers

  • Carry your ID card for quick processing; passport also accepted
  • Since Bulgaria joined Schengen air/sea borders in 2024, direct flights from France to Sofia, Varna or Burgas now use the EU/EEA fast lane
  • Land border crossings with non-Schengen neighbors may still involve document checks
  • Register with the local municipality if relocating for more than 3 months
