Austria Visa for France Citizens 2026

Visa Free

As an EU citizen, French travelers need no visa for Austria at all - a passport or national ID card is sufficient under EU freedom of movement, with no time limit on the stay.

Guide last updated September 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Valid French passport or national ID card (carte nationale d'identite) - either is sufficient, no visa or entry stamp required
  • No forms, photos, or biometrics needed for entry or short-term residence under EU free movement rules
  • No proof of funds or accommodation checked at the border, since there are no routine checks at the France-Austria Schengen border
  • Travel health insurance is not required - the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) covers medically necessary care
  • No return ticket requirement, as EU citizens are not treated as short-stay visitors under Schengen entry rules

Visa types

  • No visa applies - as an EU citizen, you have the right to enter, stay, work, and reside in Austria under EU freedom of movement
  • For stays over 3 months, EU citizens must register their address with the local municipality (Meldezettel) and may later request a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) - a registration formality, not a visa

Entry conditions

  • IMPORTANT: This is a freedom-of-movement route under the European Union's free movement of persons, reinforced by both countries' membership in the Schengen Area - a national ID card or passport is sufficient, no visa is ever needed
  • No time limit applies to the stay for EU citizens, though registration is required by law after 3 months of residence
  • Work is permitted without any separate work permit
  • No extension process is needed since there's no visa to extend - EU citizens are governed by residence registration rules instead

Fees & processing time

  • No fee, application, or processing time for entry
  • Address registration (Meldezettel) at the local Meldeamt: free, done in person, immediate
  • Registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) for stays beyond 3 months: free, processed same day to a few days

Tips for France travelers

  • Carry your ID card instead of your passport for convenience within the Schengen/EU area - it's fully valid for entry and residence
  • If relocating for work or study, register your address (Meldezettel) within a few days of finding accommodation, as Austrian law requires this regardless of nationality
  • No embassy or VFS involvement is needed at any stage for tourism, work, or residence as an EU citizen
  • Days spent in Austria do not count against any Schengen 90/180 day limit, since that limit only applies to non-EU visitors
  • If working, French professional qualifications may still need recognition (Nostrifizierung) for certain regulated professions
