Australia Visa for France Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

French citizens apply online for a free eVisitor (subclass 651) before traveling to Australia, usually approved within minutes to a few days.

Guide last updated September 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the intended stay in Australia
  • Completed online eVisitor (subclass 651) application via the Department of Home Affairs ImmiAccount portal
  • No physical photo required; a digital passport scan is uploaded during the online application
  • No biometrics required for the eVisitor visa
  • Proof of onward/return travel and sufficient funds may be requested by border officials, not the visa itself
  • Travel/health insurance strongly recommended, not mandatory for the visa

Visa types

  • eVisitor (subclass 651): free, for tourism or business visitor purposes, valid 12 months from grant, allows stays of up to 3 months per visit, multiple entries
  • Visitor visa (subclass 600): fee-based alternative if eVisitor eligibility doesn't apply, fee from AUD 195
  • Working Holiday visa (subclass 417): for eligible applicants aged 18-30 (up to 35 in some cases), fee AUD 650, valid 12 months

How to apply online

  • Apply directly through the Department of Home Affairs website (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au) using an ImmiAccount - no third-party agency needed
  • Enter passport details, travel history, and answer health/character questions
  • No fee for the eVisitor (subclass 651)
  • Processing is usually within minutes to a few days; most applications are approved instantly or within 24 hours
  • Approval is sent by email and linked electronically to your passport number - no physical stamp or sticker is issued

Fees & processing time

  • eVisitor (subclass 651): no fee
  • Visitor visa (subclass 600) if applicable: from AUD 195, processing typically 15-30 days
  • No VFS or service fee for the eVisitor, since it's a direct government application
  • No express/priority processing needed as approval is usually near-instant

Tips for France travelers

  • Apply for the eVisitor at least a few days before departure, even though approval is often instant, to allow time for manual review
  • Double-check passport number and personal details match exactly, since mismatches are the most common cause of boarding denial
  • The eVisitor only permits tourism/business visitor activities - paid work is not allowed under it
  • The eVisitor's 12-month multiple-entry validity covers repeated trips without reapplying each time
  • Keep the approval email/reference number accessible when checking in for flights
