Vatican Visa for Egypt Citizens 2026

Visa Required

The Vatican has no border control of its own - Egyptian citizens enter through Italy and must hold a valid Italian Schengen visa before visiting Vatican City.

Guide last updated October 19, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Completed Schengen visa application form (for entry via Italy, since the Vatican has no independent border)
  • Two recent passport photos, 35x45 mm, white background
  • Confirmed round-trip flight itinerary and Rome hotel booking (Vatican City has no hotels of its own)
  • Proof of funds: bank statement showing at least EUR 50 per day of stay
  • Schengen travel health insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage, valid for the whole Schengen area
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) taken in person at the Italian consulate or VFS center in Cairo

Visa types

  • There is no separate 'Vatican visa' - entry is via an Italian Schengen (Type C) tourist visa
  • Short-stay Schengen tourist visa: single or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within a 180-day period, fee EUR 90
  • Pilgrimage/religious group visa: same Schengen category, sometimes supported by a letter from a recognized pilgrimage organizer
  • Special Vatican audience passes (for papal audiences) are free but must be requested separately through the Prefecture of the Papal Household, not part of the visa process

How to apply

  • Book an appointment with the Italian Consulate General in Cairo or Alexandria, or the designated VFS Italy visa application center
  • Submit the Schengen application form, passport, photos, financial proof, insurance, and itinerary in person
  • Pay the visa fee at the application center (cash or card, depending on the center's policy)
  • Attend the biometrics appointment and, if required, a short interview
  • Processing typically takes 10-15 calendar days, longer in peak season
  • Once the Schengen visa is issued, it allows entry to Rome, from where the Vatican is freely accessible on foot (no separate checkpoint for day visitors, but security screening applies at major sites like St. Peter's Basilica)

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 for adults (reduced or waived for children under 12)
  • VFS Italy service fee: approx. EUR 25-30 in addition to the consular fee
  • Total estimated cost: EUR 115-120
  • Standard processing time: 10-15 calendar days
  • Premium/priority lounge service may be available at the VFS center for an extra fee, cutting appointment wait times but not the official decision time

Tips for Egypt travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before travel, since Italian Schengen appointments in Cairo can book up quickly
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient funds, unclear trip purpose, or inconsistent travel history
  • Use the official VFS Italy center in Cairo rather than unauthorized agents advertising faster service
  • If visiting for a papal audience, request free tickets through the Prefecture of the Papal Household well in advance, separate from the visa
  • A Schengen visa issued via Italy also permits travel to other Schengen countries during its validity, which is useful for combining the Vatican with a wider Europe trip
