Guide last updated October 18, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Completed Schengen visa application form (available via the VFS Global centre handling Dutch visas in Cairo)
  • Two recent biometric passport photos, 35x45mm
  • Confirmed round-trip flight reservation
  • Proof of accommodation for the entire stay
  • Travel/Schengen medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 coverage
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months showing sufficient funds (commonly around EUR 50-55 per day recommended)
  • Proof of employment or business registration, and a leave-approval letter if employed
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) captured in person at the visa application centre

Visa types

  • Schengen short-stay visa (Type C), single entry - valid for the trip duration, up to 90 days, fee EUR 90 for adults
  • Schengen short-stay visa (Type C), multiple entry - issued to travelers with a good travel history, validity from 1-5 years
  • Airport transit visa - for passengers transiting through a Dutch airport without passing border control, lower fee
  • National (Type D) long-stay visa - for work, study, or family reunification, separate application and higher fee

How to apply

  • Book an appointment at the VFS Global Netherlands visa application centre in Cairo (or Alexandria if available)
  • Submit the completed form with all supporting documents and biometrics in person
  • Pay the Schengen visa fee (EUR 90, or reduced EUR 40 for children aged 6-11) plus the VFS service fee (typically around EUR 25-30 or EGP equivalent)
  • Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, though it can extend to 30-45 days during peak season
  • Collect the passport with the visa, or opt for courier return if offered by VFS

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 (adults), EUR 40 (children 6-11), free for children under 6
  • VFS service fee: approximately EUR 25-30 (paid in EGP equivalent)
  • Total estimated cost: around EUR 115-120
  • Standard processing: 15 calendar days from the appointment date
  • Premium/priority services may be offered by VFS for an extra fee, reducing processing to around 5-8 days in some cases

Tips for Egypt travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before travel, as Schengen appointment slots in Cairo can be booked out
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient funds, weak ties to Egypt (no clear return reason), or inconsistent travel history
  • If you plan to visit multiple Schengen countries, apply at the embassy of the country where you will spend the most time or which is your main entry point
  • Extensions inside the Schengen area are rarely granted except for emergencies (medical, force majeure)
  • Keep copies of all documents submitted, since VFS does not return originals of supporting paperwork
