Visa Required

Egyptian citizens need a visa to enter Japan, applied for through the Japanese embassy or its visa application center in Cairo, with an e-Visa option available for eligible applicants.

Guide last updated October 17, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the intended stay, with at least one blank page
  • Completed Japanese visa application form
  • One recent passport-size photo (45x45mm, white background)
  • Proof of funds (bank statement, sponsor's letter if applicable)
  • Detailed itinerary and hotel bookings, or an invitation/guarantee letter from a host in Japan
  • Certificate of Eligibility (COE) required in advance for work, study or long-stay visa categories
  • Biometrics not standard for short-stay visitor visas but may apply for certain long-stay categories
  • Travel insurance recommended, not mandatory for short visits

Visa types

  • Temporary Visitor visa (tourism/business/visiting friends): single entry, valid for stays up to 90 days, fee approx. JPY 3,000 (single entry) / JPY 6,000 (multiple entry)
  • Multiple-entry visa available for applicants with a strong travel history or business ties
  • Work, study and long-stay visas require a Certificate of Eligibility from a sponsor in Japan before applying

How to apply

  • Submit the application and documents to the Embassy of Japan in Cairo or its designated visa application center
  • Japan has expanded its e-Visa system (evisa.mofa.go.jp) to additional nationalities; check current eligibility for Egyptian applicants, as this can reduce the need for an in-person visit
  • Pay the visa fee as instructed at submission or on collection
  • Processing is handled directly by the embassy's consular section; interviews are not standard but documentation review is thorough

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: JPY 3,000 (approx. USD 20) for single entry, JPY 6,000 (approx. USD 40) for multiple entry
  • No separate service-center fee if applying directly at the embassy
  • Standard processing time: 5-7 working days once the complete application is submitted
  • No official expedited service; apply with sufficient lead time, especially during Japanese holiday periods

Tips for Egypt travelers

  • Prepare a clear, day-by-day itinerary, as visa officers scrutinize travel plans closely for first-time applicants
  • If eligible for the e-Visa, this route is faster and avoids an in-person embassy visit; confirm eligibility before booking an appointment
  • Business travelers should secure a formal invitation and guarantee letter from their Japanese host company well in advance
  • Common rejection reasons include vague itineraries, insufficient proof of funds, or unclear purpose of visit
  • Register with the Egyptian embassy in Tokyo for longer stays and keep a copy of your visa and entry documents while traveling within Japan
