What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least 1 blank page.
  • No paper application form - everything is submitted through the evisa.gov.et portal.
  • Proof of funds: bank statement or equivalent showing sufficient means for your stay.
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket.
  • Hotel booking or accommodation address in Ethiopia.
  • Digital passport-style photo (JPEG, white background) uploaded during the online application.
  • No biometrics required for the e-Visa itself; fingerprints are taken on arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for the entry stamp.
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, not mandatory, but a yellow fever certificate is required if arriving from or having transited a yellow fever endemic country.

Visa types

  • Tourist e-Visa (single entry): valid for 30 days from issue to enter, allows a stay of up to 30 days, approx. $52 USD.
  • Tourist e-Visa (90-day stay): single or multiple entry, allows a stay of up to 90 days, approx. $72 USD.
  • Business e-Visa: single entry, up to 30 or 90 days stay depending on category, approx. $52-$72 USD, requires an invitation letter from an Ethiopian company or organization.
  • Transit visa: for layovers over 24 hours, short validity, lower fee, obtainable on arrival in limited cases.

How to apply online

  • Go to evisa.gov.et and select the visa category (tourist or business).
  • Create an account, fill in personal and trip details, and upload your passport bio page, photo, and any supporting documents.
  • Pay the fee online by debit or credit card (Visa/Mastercard accepted).
  • You will receive an email confirmation and, once approved, a PDF e-Visa approval letter - print it and carry it with your passport.
  • Approval typically arrives within 1-3 business days; apply at least 5-7 days before travel to allow for delays.
  • Present the printed e-Visa and passport at check-in and again on arrival in Ethiopia.

Fees & processing time

  • 30-day single entry tourist e-Visa: approx. $52 USD, paid online by card.
  • 90-day tourist e-Visa: approx. $72 USD.
  • No separate service fee - the portal fee is the total cost.
  • Standard processing: 1-3 business days.
  • No official expedited/priority option is advertised; apply early during peak travel seasons to avoid delays.
  • Total estimated cost including the visa fee only (no third-party agent needed): $52-$72 USD.

Tips for Egypt travelers

  • Apply online yourself directly through evisa.gov.et - there is no need to use a third-party agent or visit an embassy.
  • Apply 5-7 days before travel; last-minute applications can be delayed if the system is busy.
  • Common rejection reasons: blurry passport scan, mismatched name spelling between passport and application, and insufficient proof of funds or accommodation.
  • Double-check your Ethiopian Airlines or connecting flight booking matches the dates on your e-Visa application.
  • If you need a longer stay, the 90-day e-Visa is extendable at the Ethiopian Immigration office in Addis Ababa before it expires.
  • Carry a printed copy of the e-Visa approval - relying on a phone screenshot alone can cause boarding issues.
