Guide last updated October 17, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay, with 2 blank pages
  • Costa Rica visa application form, fully completed and signed
  • 2 recent passport-size photos, white background
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statement, last 3 months)
  • Confirmed round-trip flight itinerary
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Travel/health insurance covering the stay is strongly recommended
  • Biometrics (fingerprints) are taken in person at the consulate or VFS-style visa center if available

Visa types

  • Tourist visa (Visa de Turista): single or multiple entry, valid for use within 90 days of issue, allows a stay of up to 90 days, fee approx USD 50
  • Business visa: similar validity, requires an invitation letter from a Costa Rican company, fee approx USD 50
  • Transit visa: for layovers, shorter validity, fee approx USD 30

How to apply

  • Egyptian applicants typically apply through the Costa Rican embassy covering Egypt (often routed via Costa Rica's mission in a neighboring country, since Costa Rica has limited diplomatic presence in the region) or an authorized visa processing partner.
  • Complete the application form and gather all documents
  • Submit in person or by courier as instructed by the consulate
  • Pay the visa fee in USD or local currency equivalent
  • Standard processing: 10-15 business days
  • Express processing is not generally offered; apply well ahead of travel
  • No interview is normally required for straightforward tourist applications, but one may be requested

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: approximately USD 50 (consulate may charge in local currency equivalent)
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee if applying directly at the embassy
  • Total estimated cost: USD 50-60 including courier/postage
  • Standard processing: 10-15 business days
  • No official express/priority service; allow extra buffer before booking non-refundable flights

Tips for Egypt travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before your travel date given limited direct consular access
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient funds shown, unclear travel purpose, missing flight/hotel proof
  • Since Egypt has no Costa Rican embassy, confirm the designated consulate (often in another Gulf or European capital) before submitting
  • Check www.migracion.go.cr for the latest requirements before applying
  • Extensions inside Costa Rica are possible through Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería but are not guaranteed
