Switzerland Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can visit Switzerland visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period as part of the Schengen Area.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
  • Proof of return or onward travel
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Proof of sufficient funds, roughly CHF 100 per day or a bank/credit card statement
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is strongly recommended
  • No advance photo or biometrics needed for short stays; EES biometric registration is being phased in at Schengen external borders, which Switzerland participates in despite being outside the EU

Visa types

  • Visa-exempt short stay: tourism, business, or family visits up to 90 days, no application needed
  • National long-stay visa (type D): required for stays over 90 days, study, or work, issued by the Embassy of Switzerland in Ottawa
  • Work and residence permits: require a Swiss employer or canton-level sponsorship and are subject to quota limits for non-EU citizens

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area
  • No work permitted on the visa-exempt entry
  • Border officers may ask for proof of return travel, accommodation, and funds
  • ETIAS travel authorization is planned for future introduction for visa-exempt travelers; check its current rollout status before booking
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are exceptional and handled by the cantonal migration office

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the visa-exempt short stay
  • ETIAS, once required, is expected to cost approximately EUR 7
  • National long-stay visa fee is approximately CHF 88-100, with processing of about 4-8 weeks given cantonal review and, for work permits, quota allocation
  • No service fee for entering visa-free

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Work permit quotas for non-EU citizens like Canadians are limited annually, so employer-sponsored applications should start as early as possible
  • Track your cumulative Schengen days if you have recently visited other member countries
  • Carry proof of funds and accommodation even without a visa requirement, as Swiss border checks can be thorough
  • Register with Canada's ROCA service before your trip
