Norway Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

As a Schengen Area member, Norway allows Canadian citizens to enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen Area, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa required for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area, of which Norway is a member
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings or invitation letter)
  • Travel/medical insurance covering the Schengen Area is recommended, particularly for winter outdoor activities
  • No biometrics required for short visa-free stays currently; the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) will require fingerprint and photo registration at first entry once fully implemented

Visa types

  • No visa is required for Canadian citizens visiting Norway for tourism or business for up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • Schengen national D-visa or residence permit is required for stays beyond 90 days, study, or work, applied for through the Norwegian embassy or UDI (Norwegian Directorate of Immigration) in advance
  • Business visitors attending short meetings or conferences fall under the same 90-day visa-free allowance

Entry conditions

  • Canadians may stay in Norway (and the wider Schengen Area combined) for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period without a visa
  • Working in Norway is not permitted under visa-free entry; a work permit is required for employment
  • Officers may ask for proof of purpose of visit, accommodation, funds, and return ticket at the border
  • No extension is available for visa-free short stays; you must leave before your 90 days are used and cannot re-enter until your 180-day rolling count resets sufficiently
  • Svalbard has separate entry rules (visa-free for all nationalities under the Svalbard Treaty), but transiting via mainland Norway still counts under normal Schengen rules

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for visa-free entry since Canadians are Schengen-exempt for short stays
  • No processing time required for visa-free entry beyond standard passport control at the border
  • A long-stay national D-visa or residence permit through UDI typically costs around NOK 5,900-6,300 (roughly USD 550-600) with processing times of 4-10 weeks
  • No expedited option is generally offered for the national visa/residence permit route

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Track your Schengen 90/180-day allowance across all Schengen countries combined, not just Norway, especially if combining a Nordic trip with other EU travel
  • The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and later ETIAS travel authorization are being phased in for Schengen entry; check Global Affairs Canada and Norway's UDI website closer to your travel date for the latest requirements
  • Carry proof of travel insurance, especially for winter sports or remote areas like Svalbard or northern Norway, where medical evacuation can be costly
  • Norwegian border officers rarely ask detailed questions for Canadian tourists, but keep accommodation and return-ticket proof accessible
  • If your trip involves work-related activities (even short business meetings), confirm with UDI whether a business visitor exemption applies to your specific activity
