Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter Malawi visa-free for tourism stays of up to 30 days.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival date
  • No visa application form required for the visa-free stay
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host details)
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Yellow fever certificate if arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission
  • Travel health insurance strongly recommended given limited medical infrastructure

Visa types

  • Not applicable for stays under 30 days - visa-free tourist and short business entry
  • For work, study, or longer stays, an entry permit or temporary residence permit is required through the Malawi Department of Immigration before or shortly after arrival
  • Malawi also offers an eVisa/eTA facility (evisa.gov.mw) that travelers may use to pre-register their trip, though it is not mandatory for the visa-free 30-day tourist stay

Entry conditions

  • Canadian passport holders may stay in Malawi for up to 30 days visa-free for tourism or short business visits
  • No paid employment permitted under this entry
  • Immigration officers may request proof of accommodation, onward ticket, and funds on arrival
  • Main entry points are Kamuzu International Airport (Lilongwe) and Chileka International Airport (Blantyre)
  • Extensions beyond 30 days can be requested at an immigration office within Malawi before the initial period expires

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for the 30-day visa-free entry
  • No processing time - granted on arrival
  • If an extension is sought, a modest fee (typically around USD 50-100 equivalent in Malawian Kwacha) applies, processed within a few business days at an immigration office

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Confirm your yellow fever vaccination status before travel, especially if transiting through an at-risk country in East or Central Africa
  • Carry a printed hotel confirmation, since it is commonly checked at the airport
  • ATMs can be unreliable outside Lilongwe and Blantyre - carry some US Dollars or Euros as backup
  • If your trip may extend past 30 days, start the extension process at least a week before your visa-free period expires
  • Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for most regions of Malawi
